Scontras to Baldacci: Rescind 'Sanctuary State' executive order
Baldacci and company seem to be covering all the bases when it comes to ludicrous government policy. Here's a press release from the Dean Scontras campaign:
Dean Scontras Calls for End To Maine's Status as a Sanctuary State for Illegal Aliens
1st District Congressional Candidate Urges Governor Baldacci to
Rescind Executive Order 13 FY 04/05PORTLAND, Maine - Congressional candidate Dean Scontras called today for Governor Baldacci to terminate Maine's status as a sanctuary state for illegal aliens. Scontras said an executive order issued in 2004 has turned Maine into the nation's only sanctuary state, where people in the country illegally are entitled to the full range of welfare benefits, driver's licenses, and other privileges intended for lawful state residents.
"This misguided order by the governor is not in the best interest of Maine or our country," said Scontras, the leading Republican candidate for Maine's open 1st Congressional District seat. "At a time when Maine's economy is struggling, it is unconscionable that our highly taxed citizens should be expected to provide welfare and numerous other benefits for people who are in our country illegally."
The executive order in question, 13 FY 04/05, issued on April 9, 2004, is entitled "An Order Concerning Access to State Services by All Entitled Maine Residents". The order prohibits state workers from inquiring about the immigration status of anyone applying for services. Consequently, thousands of people of unknown origin have been issued Maine driver's licenses. No estimates exist for the number of illegal aliens who are collecting welfare, subsidized housing, food stamps, cash benefits and many other services that Maine provides.
"Just this morning I met with a Veteran from Kennebunkport who attempted to register to vote in his town hall," said Scontras "He had his utility bill and a valid United States Passport, but he did not have his driver's license. The clerk would not let him register to vote. This Executive Order has created a scenario where an illegal alien could register to vote at the same time that a United States Veteran is denied the very same right. This is unacceptable."
Scontras said Governor Baldacci's executive order appears to violate immigration laws that make it a federal crime to "aid, abet, assist, encourage or induce an illegal alien to remain in the United States." Scontras asserts that the governor's policy breaks both the spirit and the letter of the law.
To formalize the call to the governor to rescind his reckless executive order, Scontras has created an on-line petition, which can be signed on his web site, www.teamdean08.com.
"This is not a partisan issue," added Scontras. "This should concern every law-abiding taxpayer in Maine. I am eager to find out where the other candidates in this race stand on this issue. I urge them to sign my petition and join my call for Governor Baldacci to end this dangerous policy."
A recent Rasmussen poll found that by a two-to-one ratio, the American people support the cutting off of federal funds to sanctuary cities. "The state of Maine can ill afford to continue operating under a policy that heavily burdens our taxpayers and also could endanger the billions of federal dollars that the state depends on every year," Scontras said.
Scontras recently ignited a statewide debate by calling for an end to Maine's practice of providing driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Maine is one of only seven states that still issues licenses to illegals, including those who don't even live in Maine.
"Massive illegal immigration poses a major national security threat and an economic threat," Scontras said. "It is more than an erosion of the rule of law; it is an erosion of our quality of life in Maine. With Washington having abandoned its responsibility to secure our borders, states and even counties all across the country are now taking individual action out of desperation. As Maine's next Congressman, I pledge to make securing America's borders a top priority."
